New Fraktur Arts Journal is an Eastern Pennsylvania-based, privately funded and produced journal of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and essays. We are dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging writers, focusing on—but by no means limited to—new and original thought. This can manifest at the level of form, image, diction, syntax, or structure: we like new forms that reposition us as readers and traditional forms reinfused with new energy; startling images, unpredictable diction, counfounding syntax; anything that confuses with a productive result, that surprises, delights, provokes us to thought. We like writing that is attentively crafted, and truly good work for us transcends whatever else we’ve said here.

We strive to represent the best work that is available to us, working in conjunction with artists in all media to foster an ongoing dialogue focused on what it is we do when we create. As a by-product of this, we maintain a hands-on editorial process; if you are not open to suggestions for revision, please let us know.

Our previous issues are available as downloadable PDFs on our website; we recommend reading at least one prior to submitting. Genre-specific guidelines—formatting, page limit, etc.—are below. If you consider your work to be a hybrid form or one that defies definition, please submit it in the genre in which you would prefer it to appear. Cover letters are not necessary and typically go unread; be confident that your work can speak for itself, and let it do so. The deadline for inclusion in the summer issue is May 1; the deadline for the winter issue is November 1.

We welcome simultaneous submissions in all genres provided you notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. We will do our best to respond to all submissions within one month of receipt; if you haven’t heard from us after two months, please feel free to send us a gentle reminder. Please submit only once per reading period.  Previous contributors, we ask that you allow a one-issue gap before submitting to us again.  (If your work appeared in Issue #4, for example, please do not submit again until we are reading for Issue #6.)  Following publication, each contributor is provided with three copies of the issue in which his or her work appears.

Comments, concerns, and questions about anything not addressed here may be sent to newfraktur@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Please send up to five poems—no more than ten pages total—in a single attachment. Format them as you would wish them to appear in print. Please include your name on each page of the document.

Please send no more than 2,000 words or eight (8) double-spaced pages (whichever comes first) in a single attachment. Send multiple shorter pieces or one long piece, or any combination in between, but not in excess of eight pages total. (Submissions that ignore this guideline will be deleted unread.  If your piece dribbles one or two lines onto a ninth page, that is acceptable—use your judgment.)  Please number the pages and ensure that your name appears on each page of the document.
